Cas Holmes

Extreme Stitching

Referencing ideas surrounding hand stitch and the principles of Mouttainai (too good to waste) as a primary mean for creating marks and textures.

We will explore a range of found cloth and paper surfaces and different threads to build up a range of distressed, torn, manipulated and collage surfaces to create new elements of interest in your work.

Free to members

23rd & 24th May 2026

Ali Ferguson

Stories from the Sewing Room – Cloth Collage

Sharing stories and relaxed hand-stitching inspired by memories of sewing, old haberdashery items and school sewing notes – Ali will share her relaxed approach to creating a gorgeously scrappy collage where fabrics are ripped and layered, printed words are highlighted, and personal words are hand stitched. She’ll show you how to add simple stitched motifs – all adding to your ‘sewing’ story. Time is given to every part of the process, from choosing the materials, to laying out your design, slowly & deliberately.

20th June 2026

Batool Showghi

Responding to a recent impression or an event using textiles and stitching.

Use the theme above to create a landscape or an event or a portrait or anything or anyone that has recently made an impression on you. Practice choosing a series of mixed materials to create and convey your  ideas in form of a small concertina book or a wall piece.

25th July 2026

Jayne Emerson

Fabric Recipes

A day of experimentation, play and word prompts. Mixing up techniques, breaking the rules and not thinking about end results.

What if you weave on your sewing machine, mix gel printing with patchwork, make vintage fabric modern?!

Lean into colours and fabrics that bring you joy and follow your instincts and design through doing.

Amanda Clayton

2 days – 19th & 20th September 2026

Quietly Composed

Aimed at those who wish to explore observational starting points and develop personal ideas through cloth and hand stitch.

Enjoy the calming nature of hand stitch whilst absorbing the serendipity of composition, with a pared down palette of neutrals you will explore the techniques of cutwork, darning, applique, layering and inlay using transparent qualities as well as your favourite cloth qualities. You will work towards developing an individual series of work from your own visual language.

We will introduce or revisit the essential formal elements and discuss what we believe is meant when we ‘label’ work such as abstract, semi-representational, figurative, illustrative and primitive.
